From Yuck to Yum: Turning Recycled Water into Great Tasting Beer

Date: September 09, 2016

The WateReuse Association will host the New Water Brew Contest on Saturday, September 10. The contest challenged homebrewers to produce great tasting beer from purified recycled water. Recycled water is municipal wastewater purified using advanced technology to make it safe for any purpose, including drinking. More than 100 homebrew contestants participated in the competition, which produced more than 50 cases of beer.

“Great tasting beer starts with great tasting water,” said Melissa Meeker, Executive Director of the WateReuse Association. “We wanted to show the public that purified recycled water is safe and tastes good, even better than bottled water.”

More than 1000 gallons of wastewater was purified using multiple advanced technologies, including biological and chemical processes, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, and ultraviolet light. Stringent water quality tests verified that the purified water met all state and federal standards for drinking water. Each contestant received ten gallons of water to make 12 bottles of their brand of homebrew.

Xylem and GE provided mobile units with the advanced technologies, and Tetra Tech designed and built the infrastructure to move the water through each phase of purification. Special Hoperations, a local homebrew club, organized the tasting contest.

Certified beer tasters will select the top three beers in four categories based on the basic elements of beer – Water, Hops, Malt and Yeast. Winners will receive cash and other prizes. Winners will be announced on Twitter tomorrow evening after the day of judging concludes.
