Register Now! Join us and learn about the drivers, benefits, and adaptability of a national training manual and certificate program for operators of onsite water recycling systems. The manual – Operation and Maintenance Training Manual for Onsite Non-potable Water Systems (ONWS manual) – The manual was pioneered by the National Blue-Ribbon Commission for Onsite Water Systems, with support from Austin Water, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, and Epic CleanTec. WateReuse Association and our partners are currently also working with Water Professionals International (WPI) to develop an entry-level and advanced test and certificate program based on the manual’s information. Both efforts will support the City of Austin’s Onsite Water Reuse System Ordinance, Chapter 15-13, a mandatory requirement for new development projects of 250,000 square feet or more of gross floor area to install and operate an OWRS. This manual provides information and guidance that a system operator needs to operate an onsite non-potable water system – such as onsite rainwater, stormwater, graywater, or wastewater treatment and reuse. The manual does not include – or replace the need for – hands-on experience. It is common practice for manufacturers of onsite water systems to train operators on their specific equipment processes/functions, while adhering to federal & state regulations & standards. Even though water recycling regulations are evolving and the demand for onsite systems is increasing, the people that know how to safely and effectively operate & maintain them (e.g. workforce availability) remains a barrier. The intention is for the ONWS manual to provide the specific knowledge necessary for operating and maintaining the types of onsite technologies typically associated with both wastewater and water treatment; additional manufacture-specific skills/requirements are not covered in this manual and remains the responsibility of the operator.
