Description:

In Arizona’s metropolitan areas, future water portfolios will include both water reuse and the utilization of nonideal water sources, such as brackish groundwater. What is the water future of Arizona’s remote communities? This presentation will give an overview of challenges facing safe water access in remote communities and highlight projects with remote, marginalized communities in the Navajo Nation from Dr. Vicky Karanikola’s Optimization Research for Environmental Sustainability Lab (University of Arizona). Projects include the assessment of the potential for water reuse in the Navajo Nation, small-scale off-grid water treatment design optimization, and performance testing of a small-scale solar nanofiltration system. Attendees can expect to not only learn the technical considerations but also cultural considerations when completing water projects with remote communities.

Presenter:

Lynn Carroll

Lynn is a first-year Ph.D. student in environmental engineering at the University of Arizona. She is working in Dr. Karanikola’s Optimization Research for Environmental Sustainability Lab (KORES), where her research is focused on the performance and suitability of nanofiltration for small-scale off-grid water treatment. Prior to starting her Ph.D., Lynn completed her undergraduate degree in biosystems engineering at the University of Arizona. During her undergraduate degree, she completed internships at both Hazen and Sawyer and Carollo. Lynn was also a recipient of the WateReuse Scholarship in 2022.
