WateReuse, WEF, and WEAT Host Water Reuse Congressional Briefing

Date: June 30, 2015

The WateReuse Association, Water Environment Federation, and Water Environment Association of Texas hosted a congressional briefing on water reuse and recycling on June 11. Approximately 60 congressional staff members and members of the public attended the briefing. House Water Resources Subcommittee Chairman Bob Gibbs (R-Ohio) and Ranking Member Grace Napolitano (D-CA) sponsored the briefing.

Water sector leaders used the briefing to introduce the concept of water reuse and recycling. The briefing was titled “What Congress Needs to Know about Water Reuse: How communities across the nation are solving shortage problems with water reuse, and why it might be coming to your district.”

Gibbs gave opening remarks about water reuse as a tool to address the nation’s water supply challenges. WEF President Ed McCormick served as moderator.
Several water sector leaders offered presentations:

  • Russell Schreiber, director of public works, City of Wichita Falls, Texas;
  • Richard Nagel, general manager, West Basin Municipal Water District (Carson, CA); and
  • Joe Vesey, senior vice president, Xylem (Rye Brook, NY)

The meeting provided a technical explanation of water recycling and reuse processes, the need for reuse, and the knowledge needed to work with communities to serve current and future water supply challenges.
