Simplot and Lucid Motors Win 2025 Global Industrial Water Reuse Champions Award

Date: October 14, 2025

This month, an agricultural company in Idaho and an automotive manufacturer in Saudi Arabia received a global award for water reuse, demonstrating the wide range of industries that can benefit from next-generation water solutions. The Simplot Company (Simplot) and Lucid Motors (Lucid) joined an elite circle of companies as the latest winners of the Global Industrial Water Reuse Champions Award. The winners will be recognized at the University of Pennsylvania’s Water Center Corporate Roundtable on October 17.

The Global Industrial Water Reuse Champions Award recognizes top companies that incorporate best-in-class water recycling and reuse programs to improve water stewardship and achieve their water management goals. As drought and other water challenges compound worldwide, water reuse offers an important strategy for the business community to act as responsible water stewards and create new water supplies.

The award is presented by the International Desalination and Reuse Association (IDRA), University of Pennsylvania Water Center, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Veolia, Veralto, and WateReuse Association as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Water Reuse Action Plan (WRAP). Past winners have included companies across technology, energy, food & beverage, and household products industries.

Learn more about this year’s winners:

  • The Simplot Company – The international agricultural company is recognized for the water reuse program at their LEED Gold Certified potato processing plant in Caldwell, Idaho (USA). The facility houses a Membrane Bioreactor water treatment system and return plant. The plant treats an average daily flow of 2.3 million gallons per day of potato processing water. The project has achieved nitrogen and phosphorus removal in a compact and biologically enhanced process, minimizing chemical use and reducing operator labor. A significant portion of the treated water, which meets standards equivalent to EPA drinking water, can be returned to the production facility for potato processing.
  • Lucid Motors – The electric car manufacturer is recognized for its Advanced Manufacturing Plant – the first car manufacturing facility in Saudi Arabia – which includes a water reuse facility for water used in the manufacturing process. Through advanced treatment technologies, the facility produces and reintegrates high-quality reclaimed water into cooling, washing, and other non-potable applications within the plant. This closed-loop approach reduces freshwater demand, lowers environmental impact, and aligns with both global best practices and Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 water sustainability objectives. The recycled water is also used to irrigate landscapes and develop green belts around the facility.

###

Water recycling, or water reuse, is the sustainable treatment and use of water multiple times within our communities. Water can be captured from our homes and businesses, as well as from rain and saltwater, and can be cleaned with modern technologies for purposes including industrial cooling, environmental restoration, irrigation, and drinking.
