One of the barriers to more widespread onsite industrial water reuse has been the lack of a comprehensive framework to assist in the initiation and implementation of projects. In response, a Water Environment & Reuse Foundation project (WRRF-14-04) has developed a standard approach and business case for onsite industrial water reuse.

This webcast will present a roadmap to help industry identify, evaluate and implement onsite water reuse opportunities. The presentation will focus on the business aspects of project implementation as the viability of water reuse projects will be strongly linked to whether or not the project provides financial benefit to the company.

This project relied on and benefited greatly from the contributions of five industrial partners:

  • The Coca Cola Company
  • Bayer MaterialScience (now Covestro)
  • PPG
  • Ford Motor Company
  • General Motors

These companies provided industrial water reduction and reuse case studies implemented by their companies that provide information and insights into project barriers and benefits. Based on the experience of these partners and industrial subject matter experts, a comprehensive list of common obstacles to implementation of water reduction/reuse projects and ways to overcome those obstacles will be discussed.

Tools to evaluate return on investment and to develop the business case for water projects, including determination of the total cost of water, will be discussed. Specifically, the Water Kaizen Blitz is a tool that assists companies in identifying the most efficient and cost-effective approaches to water reuse in a manufacturing or research facility. It incorporates information related to cost, as well as water use, and provides data needed to discuss water reuse opportunities in terms of business advantage. A summary of technologies that are available to industry for water reduction and reuse projects, and where they can be applied most effectively, will be presented.
