Moving Forward with our Members in Mind

Date: August 12, 2025

Reflections from Brian Biesemeyer

Interim Executive Director (March-August 2025)

Dear WateReuse Members,

It has been my pleasure to serve as your Interim Executive Director during the last five months. Water reuse has been my passion since I started in the water and wastewater businesses in the early 1990’s. I was honored to be on the WateReuse Association Board for seven years – one as the WateReuse Arizona President and six as a national board member. I believe in this organization, its mission, vision, and goals. So, when Bart Weiss and John Kmiec approached me about being the Interim Executive Director, they knew I couldn’t say no.

I also believe in our state section model and believe it fits the needs of water reuse well.  Unlike the water and wastewater industries, where the primary regulations are at the national level, water reuse regulations are primarily state driven. As such, by having strong state sections, we can impact state governing authorities at the most effective level – the local utility level – and promote safe and reasonable water reuse regulations.

My priority from day one with WateReuse was to keep the organization moving in a positive direction. Specifically, I gave staff the goal of “Moving Forward – Meeting Commitments – Maximizing Efficiencies”. So how did we do?  I’ll let you judge:

Moving Forward: An empowered, well-resourced staff is essential to supporting our members. I elevated our Membership Director, Erin Carr, to report directly to the Executive Director, allowing more visibility for membership issues. We also filled the vacant Section Liaison position by promoting Aubree Frost. Aubree is already helping enhance and support the work of our volunteer-led sections. Finally, we hired Lauren Morales as the new Executive Assistant, ensuring a smooth flow of operations for our leadership and Board of Directors. Importantly, we accelerated the process of acquiring a new association management system by 2026; a year ahead of the prior schedule.

Meeting Commitments: The Industrial Water Solutions conference in Columbus, Ohio was an amazing success with over 380 participants. Our Colorado Conference, Florida Summit, Oregon Summer Summit, and Arizona Water Reuse Symposium were lively events, with nearly all setting new attendance records. The 2026 Symposium planning is off to great start.

Maximizing Efficiencies: Staff continues to excel and the coordination between section and national staff has improved. Our association manages to achieve advocacy victories, run world-class events, and serve the needs of our membership, always punching above our weight.

I am proud to turn this organization over to Bruno Pigott and believe we are poised to be the most dynamic association in the water industry and see amazing growth throughout the entire country.

 Sincerely,

Brian K. Biesemeyer
