WateReuse Submits Comments on Draft National Water Reuse Action Plan

Date: December 17, 2019

On Monday, December 16, the WateReuse Association submitted comments to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the draft National Water Reuse Action Plan (WRAP), which details a set of actions to advance water recycling across the country.

EPA first announced its intent to develop the WRAP in February 2019, and held an initial public comment period, which ran from April to July 2019, to inform the development of a draft plan. The second comment period, which ran from September to December 2019, followed the release of the draft Action Plan on September 10, 2019 at the 34th Annual WateReuse Symposium. During both comment periods, national water sector associations including the WateReuse Association, Water Environment Federation, National Association of Clean Water Agencies, Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies, American Water Works Association, and Water Research Foundation worked in partnership to inform the content and implementation of the Action Plan. You can view our first set of joint comments here and our second set here.

The draft plan, as released on September 10, 2019, included 46 proposed actions organized across 10 strategic objectives, including technological advancement, coordination and integration of research, and improved outreach and communication, among others. The Action Plan includes actions that will be implemented by EPA and other federal agencies, as well as actions that will be implemented by stakeholder entities, such as water sector associations. EPA is planning to release a revised version of the Action Plan during the first part of 2020. Between now and the release of the final plan, EPA will be working with partners to develop implementation details for many of the actions included in the draft. WateReuse will play a leading role in implementing key actions, and will partner with stakeholders across sectors and across the country to ensure broad impact. Stay tuned for more information regarding the release of the final WRAP.
