National Water Reuse Action Plan Marks One Year of Advancing Water Recycling

Date: March 01, 2021

February 27, 2021 marked the one-year anniversary of the release of the national Water Reuse Action Plan (WRAP). The draft WRAP was first released by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and its federal agency partners at the 34th WateReuse Symposium in San Diego, California in 2019. In February 2020, WateReuse joined EPA to present the final Version 1 of the WRAP in Washington, DC.

Over the past year, EPA and the WateReuse Association, along with dozens of action leaders and partners, implemented a wide range of actions aimed at supporting the adoption of water recycling across the country.

Some of the most exciting outputs of the WRAP initiative have occurred in conjunction with the Annual Water Reuse Symposium, including the annual state regulator summit on water reuse, as well as workshop sessions on workforce, research needs, interagency collaboration, integrated water resources management, stormwater harvesting, onsite systems, and international efforts.

The WateReuse Association worked closely with EPA over the last year, not only to move actions forward, but also to broaden engagement with the WRAP, build participation across the water sector and across the federal government, and shape the evolution of the initiative. WateReuse has played a leadership role in a range of WRAP actions, including the development of case studies related to integrated water resources management and interagency collaboration, the convening of experts to identify and solve challenges related to stormwater treatment and use, the compilation of state policies and regulations, and the development of a national research strategy to advance water reuse, among others.

Looking forward, we are excited to continue our work with EPA, our partners, and our members to support greater adoption of water recycling through the implementation of the National Water Reuse Action Plan. To track progress and identify engagement opportunities, you can visit the WRAP online platform or simply view the WateReuse newsletter, WateReuse Review, each week.

WateReuse commends EPA and all those involved with the WRAP for their great work over the past year to support water recycling in the U.S. and abroad.
