Celebrate excellence in water recycling! The nomination period is officially open for the 2023 WateReuse Awards for Excellence. The awards recognize WateReuse members, their projects, and their partnerships that have made significant contributions in support of greater adoption of water reuse. Award recipients exhibit leadership in advancing education, advocacy, technology, and/or management of water resources, showcasing innovative approaches that others can follow to build resilient communities through water recycling. Awards will be presented at the 2023 WateReuse Symposium in Atlanta, Georgia. The deadline for nomination is October 14, 2022.

Late last week, the House and Senate passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which will raise $739 billion and spend $433 billion. Of the $433 billion in expenditures, $369 billion will go toward climate and energy provisions, including $4 billion for Bureau of Reclamation programs to help Western communities reduce water diversions and demand, limit consumptive use, and implement ecosystem restoration projects. The $4 billion was secured late in the process by senators from Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, and California. WateReuse is working with Congress to clarify that the funding can be used to support water recycling projects. The package does not include funding for water programs administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The City of Santa Fe’s Water Division joins the WateReuse Association and the New Mexico Section. Santa Fe has used non-potable recycled water since the 1950’s and it currently supplies approximately 13% of the city’s total water demand.

The European Commission published guidelines to help member states and stakeholders apply new regulations on the safe reuse of treated urban wastewater for agricultural irrigation. The new regulations will take effect in June 2023, setting out minimum water quality, risk management, and monitoring requirements. “We need to stop wasting water and use this resource more efficiently to adapt to the changing climate and ensure the security and sustainability of our agricultural supply,” says the European Commissioner for the Environment, Virginijus Sinkevicius. Please help us to build a national Water Reuse Communications Library! Your materials will help communities across the United States and beyond to build trust and understanding of recycled water. The library will host a broad range of materials that utilities and other communicators can borrow or use as inspiration – whether they are just beginning to envision water reuse or are looking to breathe new energy into their water reuse communications. Materials can include PDFs, graphics, web tools, videos, or other formats. We’re seeking communications materials intended for all purposes including general outreach, K-12 education, government relations, and policy advocacy.

In collaboration with our membership and sections, the WateReuse Board of Directors has drafted a new five-year Strategic Plan that updates the Vision and Mission of our organization and presents a three-year business and financial plan that supports them with concrete goals and objectives. The new plan is informed by two reports commissioned by WateReuse: a market analysis showing incredible momentum for water recycling across the U.S. and an operational assessment that makes recommendations about how our organization could be better prepared to meet the moment.
