Last week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) released lifetime health advisory (HA) drinking water levels for four per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) as well as funding to address contamination. Establishing updated and new HA levels is the latest action taken as part of the PFAS Strategic Roadmap leading up to the release of a proposed National Primary Drinking Water Regulation for PFOA and PFOS in the fall of 2022. Concurrently, U.S. EPA announced $1 billion in funding for the Emerging Contaminants (EC) in Small or Disadvantaged Communities Grant (SDC) program in Fiscal Year 22 to address PFAS contamination in small and disadvantaged communities as part of the larger $5 billion in funding provided through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

In the coming months, U.S. EPA will be responding to comments from the PFAS Science Advisory Board and is expected to release Maximum Contaminant Level Goals for PFOA and PFOS in fall 2022. Yokogawa joins the WateReuse Association as a leader in advanced digital control solutions for the stable supply of clean and safe water, wastewater treatment, water loss management, and plant optimization to reduce CO2 emissions and running costs. Yokogawa won the 2022 WateReuse Award for Transformational Innovation for its work utilizing data and machine learning systems to save energy, reduce chemical use, and provide greater confidence in water quality.

Wakulla County's Otter Creek Water Reclamation Facility recently began its aquifer recharge program at the Wakulla County golf course which is now receiving treated wastewater that will be returned to the aquifer through application on the Golf Course. This project protects sensitive surface water bodies while adding to the sustainability of the aquifer. Read more.

Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority (ABCWUA) is now providing water for landscaping at the Albuquerque International Sunport, the state’s largest airport, saving 4 million gallons of water per month. This project has been in development for more than a decade and the airport now joins over 20 other facilities that use reclaimed water from ABCWUA. Read more.

New York City and Jacobs will assess the feasibility of consolidating existing wastewater facilities into a modern resource recovery facility that would produce recycled water as well as fertilizer and renewable energy. The proposed facility would be built on Rikers Island following the relocation of the island’s existing jail, and would maximize the beneficial use of water, nutrients, and energy. Read more.

The Reclaim the Rain initiative recently selected communities in Norfolk and Suffolk counties to work on managing and reusing flood water. The project has been awarded 6.4 million pounds and will deliver beneficial flood water reuse by agriculture, industry, communities and the environment, combined with nature-based flood management solutions.
