Water Week Fly-In Convenes Water Sector Professionals to Advocate for Critical Water Sector Priorities

Last week, hundreds of water professionals gathered in Washington, D.C. to advocate for key water sector priorities, including investments in water reuse infrastructure. On Tuesday, April 14, utility leaders and policymakers shared perspectives on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) efforts to advance water reuse and the role of water reuse in data centers and artificial intelligence.

Assistant Administrator of EPA’s Office of Water Jessica Kramer emphasized the importance of the agency’s reuse initiatives: “We need to make sure that we are maximizing every dollar and every drop,” she noted, explaining that reuse infrastructure strengthens American industry while protecting public health and water supplies. Kramer also noted last week’s kickoff of the Water Reuse Action Plan (WRAP) 2.0 initiative as a key vehicle for continuing to advance adoption of water reuse.

Tuesday’s gathering also included a panel on data centers and artificial intelligence which addressed the role of reuse in enabling technological advancement and economic growth while protecting communities’ water supplies. “To make sure we have a resilient infrastructure over time, we want to be looking at that circular water economy,” said Kristen Atha, director of WateReuse member Columbus Water & Power. Atha shared the utility’s reuse planning efforts to accommodate growing industrial presence in Columbus, including over 120 active or planned data centers.

EPA Announces Water Reuse Action Plan 2.0

On Thursday, April 16, 2026, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rolled out the National Water Reuse Action Plan (WRAP) 2.0 at an event at EPA headquarters in Washington, DC. WRAP 2.0 focuses heavily on water for industry and builds upon the ongoing, iterative Action Plan initially launched in partnership with WateReuse by the first-term Trump Administration in 2020.

As part of WRAP 2.0, WateReuse has committed to mapping available and planned recycled water supplies across the country, creating water reuse workforce training tools, developing a water reuse pledge program for industry, supporting the use of recycled water in beverage manufacturing, and convening companies from across multiple industrial verticals to address barriers to scaling up the use of recycled water, among other actions.

EPA Launches New Initiatives to Address PFAS and Provide Technical Assistance Funding

Last week, EPA announced the launch of the PFAS OUTreach (PFAS OUT) initiative and funding for the RealWater Technical Assistance (RealWaterTA) initiative.

The PFAS OUT initiative is working to connect more than 3,000 drinking water systems and communities to resources and funding to support their efforts in achieving timely federal regulatory compliance for PFOA and PFOS standards. This technical assistance is intended to enable utilities to comply with PFAS-related regulations more easily.

Through the RealWater TA initiative, EPA has announced $30 million in grant funding to support rural community water supplies. These funds are intended to help communities through technical assistance, training, workforce development, and operational support. Funding is available to nonprofit organizations, public institutions of higher education, and nonprofit private colleges for the benefit of private well owners and small public water systems. The Notice of Funding Opportunity will remain open until May 13, and award notification is expected in August.

EPA Releases Sixth Contaminant Candidate List

The Office of Groundwater and Drinking Water has released its latest draft of the Contaminant Candidate List (CCL). The CCL informs which contaminants get selected and tracked under the Safe Drinking Water Act’s Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR). This CCL draft is composed of 9 microbes and 75 chemicals, including four chemical groups – disinfection byproducts, microplastics, PFAS, and pharmaceuticals. Comments on this draft are due by June 5, 2026 through the online portal.

CA: Metropolitan Water District of Southern California Allocates $150 Million for Pure Water Southern California Planning

Last week, WateReuse member Metropolitan Water District of Southern California’s board approved $150 million to continue planning Pure Water Southern California for the next two years. The funding will enable Metropolitan to continue determining the project’s phases, finalize pipeline routes, and other logistical elements. Bruce Reznik, executive director of WateReuse member Los Angeles Waterkeeper, praised the board’s decision, noting that the project marks a transition from relying on imports to local control and bolsters communities’ water supplies while protecting the environment. Over half of the funding for project planning is from state and federal grants, with the remainder sourced from Metropolitan’s reserves.
