WateReuse in the Media
Renewed: The Journey to Safe Drinking Water

In collaboration with the Southern California Water Coalition, WateReuse has developed an animated educational video illustrating the advanced water purification process. Available in both English and Spanish, the video tells the story of how communities are safeguarding a reliable, affordable water future by using advanced purification which meets or exceeds drinking water standards. The multi-barrier approach shown and paired with continuous monitoring reflects best practices used around the world and can be tailored to local regulations and infrastructure.

We invite water agencies, educators, community groups, and media everywhere to watch, share, and embed the video as a plain‑language explainer of how advanced purification turns recycled water into safe, great‑tasting drinking water.

Inside EPA Addresses Regulations, Data Centers, and Future of Reuse

Last week, Inside EPA published a deep-dive interview with WateReuse's Bruno Pigott. The wide-ranging conversation covers the value of water reuse for data centers, state water reuse regulations, and the future of the U.S. EPA’s Water Reuse Action Plan. Pigott discussed the importance of passing H.R. 2940, the Advancing Water Reuse Act, saying “it would unlock a significant increase in the use of recycled water, because there’s an incentive in place” for industrial projects.

Provide Your Feedback This Week: Reuse Projects Benefitting from Small Grants

WateReuse is seeking feedback on what types of water reuse projects would most benefit from small amounts of federal grant funding. In particular, we are asking for your help determining the most effective use of grants of less than $650,000. Ideas could include piloting, testing, and onsite reuse projects, among others. If you have thoughts on what types of projects would benefit most from smaller funding amounts, or if you have specific examples of relevant projects, please reach out to WateReuse’s Director of Policy and Government Affairs, Greg Fogel, at gfogel@watereuse.org or 805-570-3038. Please do so before March 31, 2026.

WateReuse Meets with Office of the U.S. EPA Administrator

Last week, WateReuse met with senior staff for the Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to discuss a range of water reuse-related issues, including the growing need for recycled water by data centers, manufacturers, and other industrial entities. We discussed the Administration’s role in leading the National Water Reuse Action Plan, recent partnerships forged with key industrial sectors through the White House’s National Energy Dominance Council, and the need to break logjams in the disbursement of federal grants and loans to water reuse projects across the country.

Take Action on 2026 Water Reuse Priorities

As Water Week approaches, WateReuse members are coming together to elevate key advocacy goals for the year. We need your help raising the profile of the most important legislative and funding priorities that will catalyze water reuse nationwide. WateReuse has published a comprehensive action alert summarizing three key areas of action: Protecting water reuse programs in 2027 Appropriations, incentivizing industrial reuse through the Advancing Water Reuse Act, and securing cosponsors for the MORE WATER Act. Please join us in contacting your senators and representatives to explain the importance of a resilient water future.

State Updates and Member Profiles
Welcome New WateReuse Member!

WateReuse Association and WateReuse California welcome the City of Mountain View! The City of Mountain View has a recycled water program which allows customers to connect to reclaimed water sources for landscape irrigation as well as a recycled water hydrant use program, allowing commercial haulers to connect to hydrants for authorized purposes. The system provides a drought-resilient supply and conserves potable water for its residents.

DC: Potomac Interceptor Repaired, Underscores Case for Pure Water DC

Last week, WateReuse member DC Water completed repairs on the Potomac interceptor, which ruptured in January causing an historic sewage spill. While the spill never threatened drinking water supplies, it underscored the need for water supply resilience in the nation’s capital. Water reuse is a central element of DC Water’s efforts to enhance water supply resilience – the utility plans to preview its planned Pure Water DC Discovery Center in Summer of 2026.

TN: Memphis xAI Data Center to Implement Reuse to Protect Local Water Supply

Last week, Governing magazine reported that xAI will use non-potable recycled water to cool its Colossus data center located in Memphis, Tennessee. Construction on the Colossus Water Recycling Plant, which is owned and operated by xAI, began in October 2025 as a result of an agreement between the city, the Tennessee Valley Water Authority, the local utility, and xAI. The city’s wastewater treatment plant, situated next to the industrial park where Colossus is located, produces 40 million gallons of treated wastewater per day. The recycled water facility is intended to supply the 3 million gallons per day required to operate the data center’s open loop cooling system, with the potential to allocate additional recycled water to other industrial users. The facility is still under construction.
