2026 WateReuse Symposium

Last week, the 2026 WateReuse Symposium brought together nearly 1,400 water industry professionals from across the nation and around the world. The event addressed critical topics in water reuse, including water recycling infrastructure for artificial intelligence, the growing prevalence of reuse in the Midwestern United States, and strategies to secure funding for potable reuse systems.

Water Reuse for Artificial Intelligence

Our Tuesday morning plenary panel convened experts to discuss the key role of water reuse in the artificial intelligence revolution. The panel explored partnership opportunities between industry and utilities, focusing in on the case study of City of Quincy, Washington's partnership with Microsoft.

The Road to Reuse in America's Heartland

Communities in the water-abundant Midwestern United States are proactively adopting water reuse programs to address aging infrastructure, groundwater depletion, nutrient pollution, and climate impacts. Local and federal water leaders convened for a Symposium plenary to discuss the region's unique water reuse drivers, regulatory frameworks, funding mechanisms, and more.

The Price of Purification: Balancing Affordability, Resiliency, and Economic Benefits

The Symposium’s closing panel focused on strategies to secure the significant funding required for potable reuse projects. Utility leaders shared how they secured investments for pure water infrastructure, explaining the economic and social benefits of their projects and the innovative approaches needed to ensure a sustainable future for their communities.

Registration Opens Tomorrow: Industrial Water Solutions

Industrial Water Solutions, co-hosted by the WateReuse Association and the Water Environment Federation, is the essential conference for professionals who provide, treat, manage, use, or regulate water in industrial settings to find solutions that turn waste streams into value streams.

Registration opens tomorrow, March 17. Register early to join industry thought leaders in Chicago to collaborate, network, and share strategies to empower industries and the communities they call home.

Applications Open for Large-Scale Water Recycling Projects

Last Thursday, the Bureau of Reclamation published the WaterSMART Large-Scale Water Recycling Projects funding opportunity. The funding can support the planning, design, or construction of large-scale projects that maximize limited water supplies in the Western United States and reduce reliance on imported water by providing new, drought-resistant, local water supplies. Applications are due by May 13.

WateReuse Association helped create the Large-Scale Water Reuse Projects Program and has been working since last year to facilitate the release of this funding notice. We encourage WateReuse members to closely examine the eligibility criteria and consider applying for cost-share funding. Importantly, authority for the program expires in November 2026. WateReuse is actively working with Congress to enact legislation that extends authority and authorizes annual appropriations beyond 2026.

NPR Highlights Potable Reuse

On the closing day of the 2026 WateReuse Symposium, National Public Radio's All Things Considered broadcast a nationwide story about potable reuse. WateReuse Executive Director Bruno Pigott told Central Florida Public Media's Molly Duerig: "It's easy for me to say I'm excited about it. But I've got to make sure that the public understands it, that it's pure and safe, and understands the complex nature of water — that every drop of water has been used before."

Texas Profile in Reuse

Water has been reused for agricultural irrigation in Texas since 1800, and for industrial uses since the 1940s and 1950s in Odessa, Big Spring, and Amarillo. Today, Texas reuses water for power plant cooling, commercial and municipal irrigation, river and stream flow enhancement, natural gas and oil field production, augmentation of drinking water supplies, and more. The Texas Profile in Reuse includes case studies explaining the role of recycled water in providing surplus water in case of drought, sustaining habitat for wildlife, and more. Whether you’re persuading policymakers or educating students, this document supplies an overview of the most impactful water reuse projects and applications across Texas.
