On August 10, the WateReuse Association submitted a letter to Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Camille Touton, urging the Bureau to increase the per-project funding cap for the Title XVI-WIIN Water Reuse Grants Program from $30 million to $40 million. In developing our letter, WateReuse surveyed our members who have completed Title XVI-WIIN feasibility studies and asked them how their project costs have increased in recent years. We found that on average, project costs amongst all survey respondents increased by nearly 80 percent since completion of their Title XVI feasibility studies. Our letter notes this significant increase in project costs and urges Reclamation to use its authority under the Reclamation Recycling and Water Conservation Act of 1996 to increase the per-project funding cap accordingly.

The membership nominates potential award winners each year and awards are presented during a ceremony at the Annual Conference, November 5-7 in Indian Wells, California.

Eastern Municipal Water District (EMWD) was selected by the Department of the Interior (DOI) to provide a briefing and tour of its planned Purified Water Replenishment (PWR) facilities to Department of the Interior Secretary Deb Haaland last week. Sec. Haaland, Congressman Mark Takano (CA-39th), and staff from DOI met with EMWD officials and regional dignitaries including leadership from the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians. The briefing provided an overview of EMWD's PWR program, which will use ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis to purify recycled water and use it to replenish the local groundwater basin, where it will one day become a drinking water source. The Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Reclamation has committed $10 million in funding to the project through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021. EMWD has also previously received a $17.5 million commitment for the project through the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act.

U.S. EPA has proposed the first-ever National Primary Drinking Water Regulation to limit six PFAS chemicals and is also proposing to designate both PFOA and PFOS as “hazardous substances” under CERCLA, commonly known as Superfund.
