The WateReuse Association’s new Water Reuse Research Committee will convene its first meeting on Thursday, September 27 at 3:30 pm Eastern Time. Research can answer important questions that support our mission of empowering communities and businesses to embrace water recycling. The new committee will help WateReuse identify high priority research needs and explore opportunities and partnerships to complete the research. The committee is open to all WateReuse members. The EPA awarded the first $4 million of a $10 million grant to the University of New Mexico to administer one of EPA’s new Environmental Finance Centers (EFCs). The EFCs provide technical assistance and other capacity-building resources to help local governments, states, tribes, and non-governmental organizations access funding for water infrastructure projects, including water recycling projects.

The WateReuse Association welcomes NJS Engineers India. Formed in 2007 to support projects in India, NJSEI’s vision is to empower its employees, and people at large, to safeguard the environment for the present and for generations to come. Water and energy are at the core of their business practice for clients in India and worldwide. NJSEI’s projects include river and lake rejuvenation projects, some of India’s largest sewage treatment plants, and sewage water reclamation plants.

The City of Boise and Brown and Caldwell produced a video explaining the purpose and progress of the city’s advanced water treatment pilot. The pilot seeks to identify the best treatment train for advanced purification of industrial wastewater, as well as to educate the public and allow for hands-on operator training. The pilot will help inform future water reuse projects to address climate change, increase resiliency, and protect the Boise River.

The New York Times published a story on recycled water beer, highlighting WateReuse members Scottsdale Water, City of Boise, Epic CleanTec, and Stanford University. Recycled water beer is an effective tool for engaging the public and helping community members understand the safety of recycled water. "We found the beer event to be a fun way to kind of get people over that fear," Brian Biesemeyer of Scottsdale Water told the Times. "I think the biggest thing was, it tastes good," said Chris Garrett, the owner of Devil's Canyon Brewery.

CBS and KFF Health News published a story addressing the continued perception challenge that potable reuse faces in some communities, while also highlighting the high quality and growing adoption of drinking-quality water reuse across the United States. "There is no reason to only use water once," said Peter Fiske, director of the National Alliance for Water Innovation at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. "We've got to be more clever with the water we've got."

Talking Under Water interviewed Veolia Water Technologies and Solutions’ Katie Peach, North American domain leader for potable and advanced reuse. “We see regulations getting tighter in certain regions, for the purpose of environmental protection,” said Peach, who argues that reuse is a multi-benefit solution to regulatory compliance. Another driver Peach notes is the desire for self-sufficiency from utilities that previously relied on imported water.

U.S. EPA has proposed the first-ever National Primary Drinking Water Regulation to limit six PFAS chemicals and is also proposing to designate both PFOA and PFOS as “hazardous substances” under CERCLA, commonly known as Superfund.
