WateReuse Association, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Veolia, University of Pennsylvania Water Center, and International Desalination Association are pleased to invite nominations for the 2024 Global Industrial Water Reuse Champions Award. The award recognizes top Fortune 1000 companies that incorporate the best-in-class water recycling and reuse programs to improve water stewardship and achieve their water management goals. The inaugural set of awards was presented at the 2023 WateReuse Symposium and the 2024 recipients will again be presented with their awards during the 2024 Annual WateReuse Symposium .

This Industrial Water Reuse Champion award program is part of the National Water Reuse Action Plan (WRAP), a multi-stakeholder effort lead by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to advance the science, policy, research, and communications supporting water reuse and recycling. Deadline: July 19, 2023

Apply by July 19 for the Bureau of Reclamation’s Lower Colorado River Basin System Conservation and Efficiency Program . Funding will be provided to system efficiency improvements and monitoring projects, including water reuse projects, that result in measurable water savings in the Colorado River and Lake Mead. Proposals must be submitted by a Central Arizona Project contract holder or Colorado River water delivery contract/entitlement holder. The USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service has released a Notice of Funding Opportunity for the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) with a deadline of August 17. Eligible applicants include associations or organizations that work cooperatively with agricultural producers, farming cooperatives, states, local governments, tribes, water districts, institutions of higher education, and others. WateReuse members that work with or serve farmers are encouraged to consider developing an RCPP project proposal focused on reuse for water quantity, water quality, and/or other resource concerns. Project allocations may range from $250K – $25 million, with total funding available set at approximately $500 million.

Applicants for NOAA’s Climate Resilience Regional Challenge may include coastal states, territories, tribes, counties, cities, or other political subdivisions, institutions of higher education, non-profit organizations, and regional planning councils. The program contains two tracks: Track 1, Regional Collaborative Building & Strategy Development, highlights capacity building efforts, equitable outcomes, and collaboration on resilience adaptation strategy development. Projects will range from $500K - $2 million, with total funding for Track 1 projects set at $25 million. Track 2, Implementation of Resilience & Adaptation Actions, focuses on the implementation of previous resilience and adaptation planning efforts. Projects under Track 2 range from $15 million - $75 million, with total funding set at approximately $550 million. Both tracks can fund water reuse projects and emphasize risk reduction, regional collaboration, equity, and sustainable capacity building.

EPA has announced state allocations totaling $50.4 million through the Small, Underserved, and Disadvantaged Communities Grant Program to help communities strengthen drinking water system, including through water reuse. Like the State Revolving Fund Programs, EPA allocates funding from this program to states, territories, and tribes on a noncompetitive basis before communities are able to apply for funding from their state administrators (see State and Regional Contacts list here). Funding from the program may be used to improve drinking water quality, build the capacity of water systems and operators, and achieve compliance with Safe Drinking Water Act regulations.

A new water recycling system on the International Space Station (ISS) recovered 98% of the water used by astronauts. NASA’s prior systems on the International Space Station could recover 93-94% of water used onboard. The innovation involves processing previously unrecoverable brine with a process including evaporation. As NASA plans missions further into outer space, this will represent a significant efficiency improvement allowing for onboard scientific equipment and other resource needs.
