Las Virgenes Municipal Water District and Triunfo Water & Sanitation District reached a new milestone last week when their Joint Powers Authority approved a final impact report for the region’s proposed Pure Water Project. The completed project will have the capacity to supply up to 6 million gallons per day, or 20% of the water needs, to residents in the western part of Los Angeles County. “It’s obvious that we need to prepare for a future where we are less dependent on distant water sources,” said David Pedersen, general manager of the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District and president of WateReuse California. “We will always need them, they will be part of our portfolio, but we need to be more self-reliant.” Read more.

In North Dakota, the Fargo Regional Wastewater Reclamation Facility is partnering with the Cass Rural Water District to construct a new wastewater treatment plant for agricultural reuse purposes. The new plant will pipe recycled water 27 miles to the North Dakota Soybean Processors plant, which is simultaneously under construction in Casselton. The treatment plant is anticipated to be operational by June 2024 and is financed by a $26.8 million low-interest loan from the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality. The wastewater will be treated by ultra-filtration and reverse osmosis before being piped to the soybean plant, where it will primarily be used for the soybean processing plant’s boiler and cooling tower. This agreement is modeled off a similar 2008 arrangement between the Fargo facility and Tharaldson Ethanol plant – one of the first such projects in the upper Midwest. Read more.

WateReuse Association’s Patricia Sinicropi gave a wide-ranging interview on the global state of water reuse on a program called Enviro Close-Up. The program is syndicated on the Denver-based Free Speech TV to cable and satellite networks nationwide. The discussion touched on projects by WateReuse members including Orange County Water District and El Paso Water. “Recycling really is about transforming the way we think about our water resources,” Sinicropi said, “it’s a One Water system – if we think holistically about it, we can sustain our future.” Watch now.

The growth of water reuse technologies and products provides utilities with an option for local, sustainable water supply, and creates opportunities for businesses to help implement these innovative solutions.
