The WateReuse Association, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Veolia, and University of Pennsylvania Water Center are pleased to invite nominations for the new Industrial Water Reuse Champions Award. The award recognizes top Fortune 1000 companies that incorporate the best-in-class water recycling and reuse programs to improve water stewardship and achieve their water management goals. The inaugural award will be presented at the 2023 WateReuse Symposium.

This award program was developed as part of the National Water Reuse Action Plan (WRAP), a multi-stakeholder effort lead by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to advance the science, policy, research, and communications supporting water reuse and recycling. How do we build better, more delightful cities that leverage the latest One Water ideas and technologies? How do the regulatory frameworks of the past half-century support these visions, and how might they unintentionally hinder them? Author, developer, and urbanist A-P Hurd will explore these questions in her keynote address “The Water Cycle and the City of the Future” at the 2023 WateReuse Symposium, taking place March 5-8, 2023 in Atlanta.

Hurd is the author of The Carbon Efficient City, an investigation of interconnected urban systems including energy and water. For nine years, she taught a graduate course on sustainability and land use economics in the College of Built Environments at the University of Washington. She speaks and writes frequently on urban issues including housing, mobility, and how they intersect with equity and resource management.

On Tuesday October 18, the International Code Council held a day-long Water Day workshop in Washington, DC. An afternoon policy panel focused on the progress of a collaboration between the WateReuse Association and the National Institute of Standards and Technology to develop standards for the operation of onsite water reuse systems. Panelists included WateReuse Onsite and Distributed Systems Committee Chair Paula Kehoe, Director of Water Resources for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and Chairperson of the National Blue Ribbon Commission for Onsite Non-potable Water Systems and WateReuse Association Executive Director Patricia Sinicropi. Mitch Landrieu, former Mayor of New Orleans and Senior Advisor to the White House for Infrastructure attended the event reception to discuss the Administration’s implementation efforts on the Bipartisan Infrastructure Legislation.

On Thursday October 20, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce held a special dialogue on the water challenges faced by small and disadvantaged communities. The session was cosponsored by Veolia and the University of Pennsylvania Water Center. Participants shared best practices for communities trying to access Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act funding. Topics included the platforms, technical assistance, and policies necessary to support environmental justice and build modern, resilient water infrastructure nationwide. WateReuse Executive Director, Patricia Sinicropi, and Board member, Paula Kehoe, participated in a panel discussion regarding how water reuse is helping small communities meet their economic, environmental, and public health goals. Scottsdale’s Advanced Water Treatment (AWT) Plant is one of the largest and most advanced water recycling facilities in the world. Recently named one of the world’s most innovative water purification projects, Scottsdale has been a leader in Indirect Potable Reuse for over 24 years. In 2019, Scottsdale’s Water Campus became the first treatment facility in Arizona (and one of three in the nation) to be permitted for Direct Potable Reuse and producing drinking water for demonstration purposes. This was a landmark achievement and represented a major advancement in the potential for alternative drinking water sources in Arizona.
