Symptoms: This valley oak tree is declining.

Diagnosis: Roots have been injured injury by construction several years ago of adjacent buildings and parking lot.

Solutions: To protect a mature tree from mechanical injury, preserve as undisturbed ground all land area beneath the tree's canopy — from the trunk all the way out to the farthest drip line.
