The WateReuse Review will be on a brief hiatus next week on August 4 in conjunction with congressional recess. We’ll be back in your inbox the following week, August 11, with our regular updates.

Get Recognized: Nominate an Industry, Utility, or Individual Today!

We are now accepting submissions through October 10 for the 2026 WateReuse Awards for Excellence! The awards recognize individuals and projects that have made significant contributions in support of greater adoption of water reuse. Award winners will be recognized at a ceremony during the 2026 WateReuse Symposium, March 8-11 in Los Angeles, CA.

Nominate an Awardee

We’re also still accepting submissions for the Industrial Water Reuse Champion Award until August 15! This award is open globally to companies that incorporate the best-in-class water recycling and reuse programs to improve water stewardship and achieve their water management goals. Please consider nominating a large water user that you work with or that operates in your service area.

Welcome New WateReuse Member!

The WateReuse Association welcomes Triangle Environmental Health Initiative (Tri-EHI)! Founded in 2016, Tri-EHI provides water, sanitation, and hygiene solutions to developing areas and is part of EPA’s National Water Reuse Action Plan and Small Business Innovation Research Program. The group is pioneering Zero Waste onsite reuse systems that can filter blackwater and graywater for non-potable reuse and recover resources for use in agriculture and soil enhancement. Headquartered in North Carolina with satellite locations in Kenya and Cambodia, Tri-EHI provides solutions across project management; data collection, analysis, and reporting; business development; sanitation technology advising; and Water, Sanitation, and Health Technology R&D.

WateReuse Arizona Celebrates 20 Years

The 2025 WateReuse Arizona Symposium, held in collaboration with Arizona Water Association, convened last week in Flagstaff, Arizona, for three days of enriching technical content and a celebration of 20 years of WateReuse Arizona. The Symposium kicked off on Sunday, July 20 with mountain biking sponsored by Filanc and the ninth annual water balloon fight. During the Monday awards ceremony, WateReuse Board Treasurer and Director of Tucson Water John Kmiec was awarded the Person of the Year Award, which celebrates individuals who demonstrate leadership and inspire others to use water recycling to create resilient and safe water supplies. Arizona State University’s Flow Forward project, led by Dr. Claire Lauer – a public engagement tool which includes two virtual reality tours of Advanced Water Purification facilities – was awarded the Project of the Year Award. WateReuse’s incoming Executive Director Bruno Pigott attended the 20th Anniversary Dinner Gala on Monday evening along with Interim Executive Director Brian Biesemeyer and WateReuse President Bart Weiss. The conference featured impactful programming across technology, policy, operations, and communications, wrapping up with a “World Café” featuring perspectives from treatment plant operators focused on building and engaging the operator workforce.

CA: Brown and Caldwell Highlights Innovative Program Delivery for San Diego’s Pure Water Program

This month, WateReuse member Brown and Caldwell highlighted its program management of WateReuse member City of San Diego’s Pure Water Program, which will supply nearly half of the city’s water supply with 83 million gallons per day of purified water. The article includes an interview with Brown and Caldwell Pure Water Program team members Diala Dandach, Bob Vilker, and Victor Occiano, who discussed their program management approach with National Program Management Director Strauder Patton. The interviewees highlighted their role in facilitating pilot studies, ensuring regulatory readiness, evaluating and optimizing energy use, and engaging with stakeholders in collaboration with the city. The team helped shepherd the Pure Water San Diego project to its current stage of Phase 1 construction.

ISG Spotlights Water Reuse for the Dairy Industry

Last week, Water and Wastewater Group Leader Rachel Kloos at WateReuse member ISG penned a blog post highlighting water reuse as a strategy for dairy processors to recover value and optimize usage of existing water resources. The blog highlights the water availability that makes recycling in these facilities advantageous: milk is composed of over 90% water, and as it’s processed into other products, that water can be reused within the production process. She notes the existing regulatory framework, the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance, which governs reuse of water within dairy processing facilities, and encourages facilities to ask critical questions about the degree of water quality needed for certain processes and the potential to recover water from business functions beyond the processing facility to optimize water efficiency.

Webcast: A Risk-Based Approach to Water Reuse

September 11, 2025
10:00 am ET | 7:00 am PT
Free to the public

Join WateReuse Ohio to get a detailed overview of the risk-based approach for designing and monitoring water reuse systems. Drs. Michael Jahne and Jay Garland from the U.S. EPA’s Office of Research and Development will describe how quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) has been used to define pathogen log reduction targets (LRTs) for reuse systems and present emerging work on chemical risk methods to inform treatment. Jahne and Garland will discuss translating the risk models into crediting frameworks to inform the design of treatment systems as well as shifting from end point water quality measurements to surrogate monitoring to assess performance. They will illustrate the development of the risk-based approach using a range of alternative source waters and end uses, with concluding remarks on the key next steps for continued advancement.

Presented by WateReuse Ohio.
