Final Push: Engage Your Congressional Delegation to Fund Water Reuse Priorities

December 20 deadline

This summer, the House and Senate Appropriations Committees began passing their FY 2025 funding bills for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Bureau of Reclamation. Congress must finalize FY 2025 funding levels by December 20. The House and Senate are currently debating whether and to what extent to fund key programs like the Title XVI Water Reuse Grants Program and the Pilot Program for Alternative Water Source Grants.

We need your help to ensure that Congress fully funds critical water recycling programs!

WIFIA Program Continues to Invest in Water Reuse in the Eastern U.S.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently announced the release of $268 million to Hampton Roads Sanitation District through the Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA) program, the third loan to be allocated to the Sustainable Water Infrastructure for Tomorrow (SWIFT) project. The SWIFT program is working to recharge groundwater to the Potomac Aquifer using advanced treatment technologies, supporting the local drinking water supply for almost 2 million people. The WIFIA program will commit $1.3 billion to SWIFT, and the rest of the project costs will be covered by the VA Clean Water State Revolving Fund. Federal funding is pivotal to water reuse implementation throughout the United States. That is why WateReuse is working to protect and grow funding for key water recycling programs through the FY 2025 appropriations process. To learn more about the federal funding process and how you can help secure investments in programs like WIFIA, reach out to WateReuse Policy Director, Greg Fogel, at gfogel@watereuse.org.

AZ: State Seeks Comment on Proposed Advanced Water Purification Rules

Virtual informational meeting: Wednesday 11/6 | 11:00 am MST

Last week, Arizona's Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) published proposed rules for advanced water purification. WateReuse Arizona (WRAZ) has worked for more than a decade to establish the regulatory clarity necessary to allow full-scale advanced water purification projects in the state. WRAZ has championed a collaborative approach to create effective regulations, including hosting work sessions with local stakeholders, national water reuse experts, and state regulators. Advanced water purification gives Arizona communities another tool to diversify and expand their water portfolios, deliver safe drinking water, and support the state's growing population and economy. A public comment period is now open until December 2, 2024.

CA: LA Water and Power Commissioners Approve Construction for Groundwater Replenishment

WateReuse members Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) and Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation and Environment (LASAN) reached a new milestone in their Groundwater Replenishment Partnership when LA Board of Water and Power Commissioners to implement their planned Groundwater Replenishment Program approved construction last week. The planned potable reuse project is one of the largest in the state, based out of LASAN’s Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant located in the San Fernando Valley. It will create a sustainable source of local drinking water for the City of Los Angeles by producing 20 million gallons per day of purified recycled water.
