Urgent Action Needed: Contact Your Member of Congress to Urge $10 Million for Alternative Water Source Grants!

Congress only has until December 16 to decide the final funding levels for critical water recycling programs in Fiscal Year 2023. Congressional appropriators will determine whether the Pilot Program for Alternative Water Source Grants – a top WateReuse Association priority – will launch in its first year with $5 million, as proposed by the U.S. Senate, or $10 million, as proposed by the U.S. House of Representatives.

Please Take Action! Contact your Members of Congress at (202) 224-3121 and urge them to support the House number of $10 million for the Alternative Water Source Grants Pilot Program in FY 2023.

WateReuse Leads Successful Delegation to Israel

Last week, the WateReuse Association, in collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. State Department and the State of Israel led a successful delegation of WateReuse members to learn about Israel’s water recycling program. Nearly forty WateReuse members, representing utilities, businesses, regulators, and research institutions, traveled from a dozen states to visit Israel’s largest water treatment and desalination plants, research centers, and industrial facilities. Participants learned about how Israel has transformed its water management system over the past two decades. Read more.

U.S. EPA Announces Award for Non-Potable Reuse Small Business Project

The U.S. EPA awarded more than $3 million to eight small businesses for the continued development of innovative environmental technologies. Among the awardees is the Triangle Environmental Health Initiative, which is receiving $400,000 in phase II funding for their compact, modular treatment system for non-potable reuse of residential and commercial greywater. This award builds upon a feasibility assessment conducted with phase I financial support from the program. EPA issues an annual Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) solicitation for technology proposals for specific high priority environmental topics. Proposals are evaluated on their technical merit, potential for commercialization, and impact in the given topic area.

Diablo Water District joins the WateReuse Association and WateReuse California as a water supplier to approximately 42,000 people in the San Francisco Bay Delta region. CA: San Francisco’s Fifteen Fifty Onsite Reuse System Approved and Operational

Following two years of testing, Epic Cleantec announced San Francisco’s first approved onsite reuse system at the forty-story San Francisco apartment building known as Fifteen Fifty. In 2016, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission pioneered a new program for onsite water reuse in large developments. “By reusing 7,500 gallons per day, or up to 2 and a half million gallons a year," says Epic Cleantec’s CEO Aaron Tartakovsky, “that's 2-and-half million gallons less of fresh drinking water they have to bring into this building." CA: Pure Water Monterey Wins Civil Engineering Award

Pure Water Monterey, the Monterey Peninsula’s recycled potable water project, was one of 11 projects to receive an American Society of Civil Engineers award for outstanding engineering achievement. Kennedy Jenks provided engineering services for the project. “To be recognized alongside high-profile national projects is truly a great honor,” said Mary Ann Carbone, the chair of Monterey One Water’s board of directors and the mayor of Sand City, CA. ID: New Water Recycling Facility Becomes Idaho’s Largest Design-Build Project

After almost a decade of planning, a $200 million expansion of the Nampa Wastewater Treatment Plant including water reuse facilities is now underway and on track to be completed in 2025. Jeff Barnes, Director of Water for the City of Nampa, told reporters that it’s the largest reuse water project in the state of Idaho, and allows Nampa to reduce its demands on the Boise River. The expanded facility is anticipated to treat an additional 11 million gallons of water per day at buildout. The project will provide roughly 15 percent of the total irrigation demand in Nampa. International Updates

Research Project Tackles Regulations and Business Models for Water Reuse

A report shared updates on WIDER UPTAKE, an international consortium spanning Europe and Africa dedicated to water reuse and resource recovery. The project focuses primarily on improving regulations, use cases, and business models, noting that the technological solutions are no longer a key barrier to implementation. One of the current projects is a pilot for urban landscape irrigation in Prague, aimed at proving the adequacy of various treatment processes to sustain landscaping and protect public health. Irrigation with recycled water is still largely prohibited in the E.U. Read more.

Potable Reuse Advances in Cape Town

The Mail & Guardian reported on Cape Town, South Africa’s first steps towards building what may be the world’s largest potable reuse project with design support from Hazen and Sawyer. The plant is currently slated for completion in 2027 at a cost of 2 billion rand or more than $100 million. The purified water will be blended with reservoir water and serve the Cape Town region. The city will be accepting construction bids in 2023. Read more.
