The WateReuse Association and WateReuse Arizona welcome Water Works Engineers. Water Works Engineers provides engineering products and services to the municipal water and wastewater market. With offices in Redding, Roseville, San Mateo, San Diego, and Los Angeles, CA; Scottsdale, AZ, and Salt Lake City, UT, they bring an understanding and sensitivity to Western water and wastewater issues. Their services include conveyance systems, utility management, alternative project delivery, infrastructure rehabilitation, wastewater treatment, drinking water services, reclaimed water treatment, construction administration, master planning, and engineering design.

This year, the Texas Legislature allocated more than $2 billion for flood control and water supply projects such as water reuse. WateReuse Texas was instrumental in advocating for this increase in funding along with coalition partners including Texas Water Foundation and Texas Water Conservation Association. While water recycling projects aren’t specifically named in the legislation, they will be eligible for much of the funding. "Although a huge investment, both the money for water infrastructure and flood mitigation represent a drop in the bucket compared to the state’s needs. For example, Texas probably needs more than $38 billion just to get started on flood prevention, according to early proposals for a statewide flood plan still in development,” writes Erin Douglas for the Texas Tribune.

Last week, The Washington Post reported on the importance of managed aquifer recharge as a tool to prevent land subsidence, highlighting municipal recycled water as a common source for such projects. Nearly one fifth of the world's population may be living on land that is slowly sinking because of groundwater extractions by 2024. The article highlights efforts by WateReuse members Coachella Valley Water District, Orange County Water District, Hampton Roads Sanitation District, Valley Water, Hilton Head Public Service District, and more.

The companies Chemours, DuPont, and Corteva recently reached settlements of over $1 billion to a settlement fund to finance filtration and remediation efforts for water systems across the U.S. Reuters reports that a fourth company, 3M, is nearing a similar settlement with the City of Stuart, Florida. These funds could pay for water treatment systems commonly found in water reuse projects, including reverse osmosis, granular activated carbon, and ion exchange.

Yale School of the Environment’s publication ran a story last week on the future of onsite reuse. “There is no reason to only use water once,” said Peter Fiske, the executive director of the National Alliance for Water Innovation, “we now have technologies to enable us to process and reuse water over and over, at the scale of a city, a campus, and even an individual home.” The article highlights building- and district-scale reuse as a solution which can allow urban infill and take stress off of expensive infrastructure, and explores a future when technology and regulation will allow for entirely off-grid developments.
