Plant damage resulting from specific ions

Symptoms: Incipient reddish discoloration on Eucalyptus camendulensis, followed by necrosis of leaf tips and margins.

Diagnosis: Tree is stressed by excess boron. This species of eucalyptus has a high tolerance for boron.

Solutions: Leach to reduce soil boron, or blend irrigation water with water containing a lower boron concentration.

Symptoms: Dark necrotic leaf margins on white mulberry.

Diagnosis: Damage noted is caused by toxicity to boron. Mulberry is moderately tolerant to boron.

Solutions: Leach soil heavily to reduce soil boron. Dilute boron in irrigation water by blending with low-boron water. If these measures fail, replace the tree with more boron-tolerant mayten or California sycamore.

Symptoms: Browning of margins and interveinal tissues on leaves of walnut tree.

Diagnosis: Symptoms indicate the tree suffers from boron toxicity.

Solution: Blend irrigation water with water of lower boron content, or leach soil.

Symptoms: Necrosis of leaf tips and margins on European hackberry.

Diagnosis: Symptoms indicate the tree is suffering from chloride toxicity.

Solutions: Avoid foliar wetting, leach soil of excess chloride, or blend irrigation water with water of lower chloride content.

Symptoms: Chlorosis of growing tips on star jasmine.

Diagnosis: Toxicity as a result of excess sodium.

Solutions: Avoid foliar wetting and, if possible, blend irrigation water with low-sodium water. If, after implementing these measures, symptoms become more severe, replace the star jasmine with a more tolerant groundcover, such as Cape honeysuckle or iceplant.

Symptoms: Yellowing and "burning" on tips of leaves.

Diagnosis: This orange tree is sensitive to both salinity and sodium.

Solutions: Avoid foliar wetting, leach soil of excess salt and sodium, and, if feasible, blend irrigation water with water of lower salt and sodium content.
