Circle of Blue this month highlighted the central role of water reuse in the nation’s first industrial park dedicated to quantum computing. The Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park (IQMP), spearheaded by Related Midwest and PsiQuantum, says it will employ a closed-loop system with internal water recycling systems at the planned facility to reduce freshwater withdrawals from Lake Michigan. While the quantum computer’s closed-loop system will use recycled water as a conservation measure, the facility’s water usage beyond that is still in flux, with community stakeholders suggesting a greater role for reuse in the park’s operations. The City of Chicago is considering supplying reclaimed water to the eight-mile-long quantum campus and future developments in the area via new pipes. “My number one goal is for Cook County, which is now currently the world’s largest freshwater diversion, to be the world’s largest water recycling hub,” said Rachel Havrelock, Director of the Freshwater Lab at the University of Illinois-Chicago.

Last month, the Las Vegas Review-Journal interviewed Alan Wolfley, Operations Supervisor at the North Las Vegas Water Reclamation Facility, who explained his career journey towards reclaimed water and provided an overview of the facility’s functionality. One of the first staffers hired upon the opening of the plant in 2011, Wolfley transitioned to the water reclamation facility after holding a water distribution position in Moapa Valley. In the interview, Wolfley explained his role as not only securing the region’s water supply but, as a result, maintaining Las Vegas’ unique spirit: “In the desert, water is a precious commodity, and North Las Vegas gets to take part in putting some of that water back into the environment and help preserve Las Vegas’ way of life,” he explained. The interview encompasses Wolfley’s career journey, evolving thoughts on water reuse and conservation, and the facility’s plans for expansion.

The City of Yelm, located just south of Seattle, this month announced the completion of its fully operational $36 million recycled water system, which has a capacity of 2.5 million gallons per day and will recycle water for non-potable reuse. The initiative is the largest infrastructure project in Yelm’s history, featuring membrane bioreactors and ultraviolet filtration. While the system currently processes 600,000 gallons per day, its full capacity is expected to accommodate future population growth. The updated system also implements resource recovery technology, which will mitigate harmful discharges and repurpose waste streams to fertilize city parks and residential landscaping. “No matter how fast Yelm continues to grow, this plant will handle that growth for probably the next 30 to 40 years,” noted Yelm Public Works Director Cody Colt.

Last month, WateReuse member Beaumont-Cherry Valley Water District (BCVWD) made strides toward its adoption of water reuse. On July 15, representatives from BCVWD, supported by WateReuse member Dopudja & Wells Consulting, presented on proposed uses for recycled water to the Beaumont City Council. The team outlined details of a collaborative solution where BCVWD would direct recycled water to a recharge point and the neighboring San Gorgonio Pass Water Agency would recharge the groundwater basin. The plan is currently with the Beaumont City Council for approval, after which BCVWD would move forward with siting and ensuring regulatory compliance. The project will entail an ongoing annual $1 million investment from BCVWD.

Primark Water Stewardship Manager Lewys Isaac was featured in an interview last week detailing the company’s new Water Reuse and Improved Wastewater project, which entailed installing water reuse systems at the Fakir Knitwears facility in Bangladesh. Primark assisted in executing the project with several partners, including WateReuse member Grundfos. The implemented technology purifies wastewater to the nearly drinking water quality required for textile manufacturing, reducing freshwater demand by up to 50%. This project is part of Primark’s larger sustainability commitment to reduce the water footprint of its new products by 30% by 2030. Isaac details his role at Primark, the project’s development, its impact, and its role in Primark’s larger strategy.

Join WateReuse Ohio to get a detailed overview of the risk-based approach for designing and monitoring water reuse systems. Drs. Michael Jahne and Jay Garland from the U.S. EPA’s Office of Research and Development will describe how quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) has been used to define pathogen log reduction targets (LRTs) for reuse systems and present emerging work on chemical risk methods to inform treatment. Jahne and Garland will discuss translating the risk models into crediting frameworks to inform the design of treatment systems as well as shifting from end point water quality measurements to surrogate monitoring to assess performance. They will illustrate the development of the risk-based approach using a range of alternative source waters and end uses, with concluding remarks on the key next steps for continued advancement.
