Welcome New WateReuse Member!

WateReuse Association and WateReuse California welcome Palmdale Water District! Established in 1918, Palmdale Water District services more than 126,000 people across the City of Palmdale and adjacent unincorporated areas in Los Angeles County. Established in 1953, the Palmdale Water Reclamation Plant recycles approximately 7 million gallons per day for irrigation. Last year, Palmdale Water District broke ground on its Pure Water Antelope Valley Demonstration Facility, the first phase in its effort to establish an advanced water treatment facility for direct potable reuse by 2029.

TX: Gulf Coast Authority General Manager Elizabeth Fazio Hale Advocates for Scaling Up Reuse

General Manager of the Gulf Coast Authority Elizabeth Fazio Hale shared her perspective in two Texas newspapers last week as part of a thought leadership campaign on scaling up reuse for industrial water users. The Galveston County Daily News and El Paso Matters published her op eds emphasizing the need for increased investment in water reuse across Texas. WateReuse worked with Fazio Hale to place the pieces, which celebrate the passage of a recent Texas water infrastructure funding bill, SB 7, and call for additional investment in reuse to accommodate increasing industrial demands from high tech industries while protecting local water supply. “It’s my hope that the U.S. Congress and the administration look at the full range of options to help American companies employ next-generation water reuse solutions,” she said. Fazio Hale also celebrated WateReuse Texas’s history of advocacy in the state, highlighting its upcoming 20th anniversary conference taking place in Houston from September 16-18.

CA: Water Online Article Highlights City of Santa Monica as Exemplary Leader in Reuse

Last week, Katie Peach, Domain Leader for Municipal and Industrial Reuse at WateReuse member Veolia, published a piece in Water Online showcasing Santa Monica as an exemplary case study in water management through its Sustainable Water Infrastructure Project (SWIP), which encompasses three reuse facilities across the city. Peach outlines how the City of Santa Monica, also a WateReuse member, collaborated with Veolia on an underground advanced water treatment facility, establishing an innovative system which utilizes membrane bioreactor technology, cartridge filtration, reverse osmosis (RO), ultraviolet disinfection, and free chlorine disinfection to deliver high quality potable water for the city. Santa Monica’s reuse facilities under the SWIP also include an urban runoff recycling facility, which is California’s first stormwater direct injection project, and a 1.5 million gallon stormwater harvesting tank at the city’s Civic Center.

Smart Water Magazine and Bluefield Research Promote Reuse as Key Solution to High Tech Water Demand

Last week, Smart Water Magazine featured Bluefield Research’s report on U.S. Water for Data Centers, highlighting surging water related expenditures for data centers and the increasing need for water infrastructure to accommodate high tech industries. Bluefield projects that annual water related capital and operational expenditures will reach $797.1 million by 2030, a 31.4% increase from today. The report also highlights that data centers are forecasted to withdraw 150.4 billion gallons, or the equivalent of 4.6 million US households, between 2025 and 2030. Bluefield proposes reuse as a key solution and highlights WateReuse member Loudoun Water’s reclaimed water program as an example of how tech companies can collaborate with municipalities to address data center water demand. “These win-win collaborations offer scalable paths to align community water needs with corporate growth strategies,” said Amber Walsh, a senior analyst at Bluefield Research.

Mid-Atlantic: The Region’s History and Future of Reuse

Since the 1940s when Baltimore began diverting millions of gallons of recycled water to the Bethlehem Steel plant to be reused for steel production, water reuse has helped the Mid-Atlantic region’s communities meet their freshwater needs. Check out the Mid-Atlantic Profile in Reuse highlighting water reuse in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC. The profile is part of a series of fact sheets summarizing regions and their unique water reuse histories, drivers, and case studies.

Webcast: Assessing Different Water Reuse Approaches with U.S. EPA

July 17, 2025
10:00 am ET | 7:00 am PT (1 hour)
Free to WateReuse Members

Join Doctors Jay Garland and Michael Jahne to learn about key research coming out of U.S. EPA’s Office of Research and Development. Garland and Jahne will provide an overview of their research addressing three key areas for developing water reuse systems: 1) defining treatment targets for contaminant removal, 2) specifying and assessing system performance, and 3) evaluating life cycle costs and impacts of different reuse scenarios. The presentation will discuss their involvement in developing a risk based, fit-for-purpose strategy in collaboration with the National Blue-Ribbon Commission for Onsite Water Systems and include work on decentralized systems for reuse of domestic wastewater, roof-collected rainwater, stormwater, air conditioning condensate, and industrial wastes streams from food processing and oil & gas extraction.

Presented by WateReuse Ohio.
