Last week, Katie Peach, Domain Leader for Municipal and Industrial Reuse at WateReuse member Veolia, published a piece in Water Online showcasing Santa Monica as an exemplary case study in water management through its Sustainable Water Infrastructure Project (SWIP), which encompasses three reuse facilities across the city. Peach outlines how the City of Santa Monica, also a WateReuse member, collaborated with Veolia on an underground advanced water treatment facility, establishing an innovative system which utilizes membrane bioreactor technology, cartridge filtration, reverse osmosis (RO), ultraviolet disinfection, and free chlorine disinfection to deliver high quality potable water for the city. Santa Monica’s reuse facilities under the SWIP also include an urban runoff recycling facility, which is California’s first stormwater direct injection project, and a 1.5 million gallon stormwater harvesting tank at the city’s Civic Center. |
