Industrial Water Solutions Conference Convenes Business and Utility Leaders

Last week, WateReuse Association and Water Environment Federation hosted the Industrial Water Solutions conference in Columbus, bringing together more than 380 professionals from the water sector and industry to address strategies for sustainable water management in the industrial space. With the global AI market poised to increase exponentially over the next decade, the Industrial Water Solutions conference highlighted strategies to accommodate the significant water demand AI requires. The conference also focused on the evolving policy and regulatory landscape, including an address from Andrew Sawyers, Director of the Office of Wastewater Management at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

WateReuse Association continues to expand our support for leaders pioneering industrial water reuse. We encourage large water users with water recycling programs to apply for the Global Industrial Water Reuse Champions Award before the August 15 deadline.

Bureau of Reclamation Releases $33M in Funding Including Reuse Projects

The Bureau of Reclamation announced $33.5 million in funding for 14 projects last week. The WaterSMART grants improve drought resiliency through water treatment, new or improved infrastructure, and implementation of new water management tools and technology. WateReuse congratulates our five members in California who received awards: East Valley Water District, Inland Empire Utilities Agency, Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, Carpinteria Sanitary District, and Palmdale Water District.

“These investments represent the continued commitment by the Department of the Interior to help build drought resilient communities throughout the West,” said Acting Assistant Secretary for Water and Science Scott Cameron. WateReuse Association works each year to secure annual appropriations for important water reuse grant and loan programs.

Urge Your Senators and Representatives to Help Lead the Advancing Water Reuse Act

Earlier this year, U.S. Representatives Darin LaHood (R-IL), Claudia Tenney (R-NY), Linda Sanchez (D-CA), and Brad Schneider (D-IL) introduced H.R. 2940, the Advancing Water Reuse Act, which would establish a 30 percent investment tax credit (ITC) to help manufacturers, data centers, and other industrial entities scale up their use of recycled water. The legislation will create opportunities for businesses to expand operations and grow jobs while also protecting local water resources. Our aim is to integrate the ITC into this year’s tax legislation; but time is short—Congress is actively debating which tax provisions will be enacted this year and which will not. We need your help today!

OH: Columbus Dispatch Highlights Ohio’s Water Reuse Future

Kristen Atha, Director of Columbus Water & Power, penned an opinion piece in the Columbus Dispatch to coincide with the Industrial Water Solutions conference in her hometown last week. “Ohio stands at an exciting crossroads in its economic development, with water management at the center of its trajectory,” Atha writes. The article highlights the value of water reuse as a transformative tool for fostering the “Silicon Heartland” of Ohio by providing water supply for new high-tech industries. Atha also promotes the idea of a federal investment tax credit for industries using recycled water, like the program outlined in the current Advancing Water Reuse Act.

OR: Summer Summit Convenes Experts as Legislature Votes to Staff Up for Reuse

Last week, WateReuse Pacific Northwest convened over 60 experts for the fourth annual Oregon Summer Summit and Social. The event took place at Chehalem Golf Course in Newberg, OR, and kicked off with a tour of Newberg’s water resource recovery facility. Participants heard presentations from Oregon utilities as well as recycled water users including golf course managers and data center operators.

The Summer Summit comes on the heels of positive movement toward water reuse regulation from Oregon’s legislature. On June 19, the state senate voted to invest nearly $300,000 to support a new interagency team leader at the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. The new role will be charged with overcoming regulatory barriers to water reuse projects.

OK: New Study Finds Strong Support for Water Reuse in Oklahoma

University of Oklahoma researchers recently published a study finding that 74% of respondents from the state support municipal water reuse, and that they’d be willing to pay up to $30 more per month to fund such programs. Researchers said they were surprised that the “yuck factor” didn’t rank higher on participants’ concerns about water reuse, but that doesn’t mean that there are no barriers to public acceptance. Responses indicated concerns about cost, necessity, and institutional trust. The research was funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. “ I think with the right communication and leadership with these problems, we have a real opportunity to implement these programs and secure water for our future,” said co-author Kaitlin Diodosio.

WateReuse Leaders Explain Potable Reuse to Food and Drug Officials

Last week, representatives of three WateReuse Association members spoke in Dallas at the Association of Food and Drug Officials annual conference. The panel addressed potable reuse in the food and beverage industry. Hunter Adams of Wichita Falls, TX addressed his community’s experience implementing both direct and indirect potable reuse. Gilbert Trejo, Vice President of Operations and Technical Services for El Paso Water – and past president of the WateReuse Association – explained El Paso’s plans for advanced water purification, including the latest technologies and processes for mitigating risk. The panel also featured Jeffrey Nassif, Director of Food Safety, Regulatory, and Audits for PepsiCo, a member of the Coalition for Water Recycling.

Google Announces Water Infrastructure Grants for Areas Including Reuse

Google, a member of the Coalition for Water Recycling, released a Request for Information (RFI) this month for water efficiency and quality infrastructure projects. Google is seeking shovel-ready and early-concept water infrastructure projects eligible for co-funding that could be under construction by 2028 to support the company’s water replenishment goals. Selected projects will be invited to submit additional information through a Request for Proposal (RFP) for grants ranging from $350,000 to $6 million. Google published a map of priority watersheds across the United States as part of the announcement. Submissions are due by September 30, 2025.

Webcast: Assessing Different Water Reuse Approaches with U.S. EPA

July 17, 2025
10:00 am ET | 7:00 am PT (1 hour)
Free to WateReuse Members

Join Doctors Jay Garland and Michael Jahne to learn about key research coming out of U.S. EPA’s Office of Research and Development. Garland and Jahne will provide an overview of their research addressing three key areas for developing water reuse systems: 1) defining treatment targets for contaminant removal, 2) specifying and assessing system performance, and 3) evaluating life cycle costs and impacts of different reuse scenarios. The presentation will discuss their involvement in developing a risk based, fit-for-purpose strategy in collaboration with the National Blue-Ribbon Commission for Onsite Water Systems and include work on decentralized systems for reuse of domestic wastewater, roof-collected rainwater, stormwater, air conditioning condensate, and industrial wastes streams from food processing and oil & gas extraction.
