Assistant Secretary Trujillo Highlights Recycled Water Investment in Texas

Today, Department of the Interior Assistant Secretary for Water and Science is joining partners in Texas to celebrate federal funding for El Paso Water’s Advanced Water Purification Facility and 24 other critical water reuse projects in the west. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) allocates $8.3 billion for Bureau of Reclamation water infrastructure projects over the next five years to advance drought resilience and expand access to clean water for families, farmers, and wildlife. Texas Congresswoman Veronica Escobar, El Paso Water’s John Balliew, Carollo Engineering’s B. Narayanan, and WateReuse Association’s Patricia Sinicropi will join Trujillo in celebrating this achievement.
Water Reuse Highlighted at House Subcommittee’s Clean Water Act at Fifty Hearing
 

Late last week, the House Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee held a hearing on the Clean Water Act at Fifty. The hearing explored highlights and lessons learned from a half century of transformative legislation. Joaquin Esquivel, Chairman of the California State Water Resources Control Board spoke about California’s $1.8 billion investment in water recycling projects that will provide an additional 124,000 acre-feet of water, supplying 600,000 homes with clean water. Esquivel highlighted the importance of investing in water recycling and the establishment of California’s potable reuse regulations. The regulations will enable the state to expand its water portfolio in the face of increasing impacts from climate change. Alongside Esquivel, Former Assistant Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency David Ross encouraged Congress to embrace water recycling as a critical water resources management tool. The WateReuse Association will host a discussion at the 2023 WateReuse Symposium about how fifty years of the Clean Water Act has led communities toward embracing water reuse to meet their potable drinking water supply challenges.

CA: Mini-Documentary on Pure Water Soquel Premieres

Last Thursday, BBC Storyworks released a five-minute documentary spotlight about Pure Water Soquel’s successes in water reuse. The film is part of a human-centric film series presented by the International Water Association called “Beneath the Surface: The Journey of Water.” The series includes short films that profile the innovations and innovators advancing water sustainability. The Pure Water Soquel film is paid and presented by Black & Veatch. Watch the story.
CA: State Should Expect a Fourth Dry Year
 

Days before the end of the Oct. 1 – Sept. 30 water year, California Department of Water Resources Assistant Deputy Director John Yarbrough said officials are preparing for a “fourth dry year.” During a meeting of the California Water Commission, Yarbrough cited increasing swings between wet and dry caused to climate change, which make forecasting difficult. Water quality challenges caused in part by wildfires are a second significant challenge. Major State and Federal funding made available this year for water reuse projects in California will be essential to addressing dry conditions and water shortages in the years to come. Read more.
FL: Panama City Beach Completes Recycled Water Pipeline
 

Panama City Beach and The Northwest Florida Water Management District celebrated the completion of the Panama City Beach Parkway Reuse Transmission System last Thursday. The system will provide access to reclaimed water to more than 200 existing connections and more than 1,500 new connections. The project will also provide as much as 400,000 gallons of reclaimed water per day for a major sports complex. Read more.
Member Update: Black & Veatch’s Annual Water Sector Survey is Optimistic on Reuse
 

Black & Veatch’s annual water sector survey and analysis provides a deep dive into some of the key drivers for water and wastewater infrastructure improvements nationwide. “In this complicated world of water, old ways of thinking are giving way,” says Black and Veatch’s Mike Orth in an article for Water Online, “to what’s new and possible in addressing chronic pain points in 2022.” Among utilities surveyed, 66.7% expected to add new treatment processes to their facility to allow for beneficial reuse.
