Learn about salt in the root zone

Illustration: Cross-section of tree root zone

For many irrigated lands in the western U.S., the potential exists for salt to accumulate in the root zone — the top few feet of soil, where plants' roots are prevalent. Such an accumulation of salt may adversely affect trees, shrubs, and other landscape plants.

This module will help you learn about salinity of the soil in the root zone and the issues that arise whenever salts accumulate. The topics covered will provide you with sufficient information to answer the following questions:

  • Why is soil salinity of concern in arid and semi-arid regions?
  • What factors determine the degree to which salt accumulates in irrigated soil?
  • What management practices are available to control soil salinity?
