Residual chlorine

Residual levels of chlorine (Cl2) may be present in recycled water as a result of disinfection of the water during the recycling process. Such chlorine can be toxic to plants if the water containing the chlorine is sprayed directly onto plant foliage. Fortunately, however, free chlorine is very unstable in air and it will dissipate quickly if the water is stored for even a short period with free air above it. Therefore, the best practice, if a chlorine toxicity problem develops, is to aerate the irrigation water somehow before applying it to the landscape.
