Measuring the pH of a proposed irrigation water can be helpful when evaluating the suitability of the water for particular landscape plants and soils. Measuring the concentrations of certain additional water constituents can be helpful in that regard, too. The main constituents of interest are carbonate, bicarbonate, residual chlorine, and the plant nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Finally, measuring a water's total suspended solids is also important. Knowing that information can be helpful when deciding whether filtration will be required to prevent clogging of irrigation nozzles.
