Tell Your Senators and Representatives to Support the Advancing Water Reuse Act

Congress is working to advance a tax package this week, and the WateReuse Association is advocating for the inclusion of a 30% Investment Tax Credit to help scale up the use of recycled water by industry. Time is short — Congress is actively debating what will make it into the tax package, and what will be left on the cutting room floor. Call or email your senators and representatives today to voice support for H.R. 2940, the Advancing Water Reuse Act.

EPA Seeks Nominations for Science Advisory Board, Including Reuse Experts

Earlier this month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it is looking for nominees, including water reuse experts, for its Science Advisory Board (SAB). The SAB was originally chartered in the 1970s as a mechanism to ensure peer reviewed, independent recommendations from subject matter experts including scientists, engineers, and researchers. Subject matter priorities for this SAB include water reuse, water quantity, drinking water, drinking water engineering, ecology, public health, risk assessment, sustainability, and water quality. Nominations will remain open until the end of May 2025, and nominees will serve a two-to-three-year term as Special Government Employees.

Climate Adaptive Infrastructure Partners with Veolia on Water-as-a-Service Project for a Leading Semiconductor Manufacturer

Climate Adaptive Infrastructure (CAI), an investment firm focused on sustainable water infrastructure, and WateReuse member Veolia Water Technologies and Solutions, have partnered to complete a water-as-a-service project for a water reuse and treatment plant at a semiconductor fabrication facility in the Midwest. Under the $66 million contract, CAI will own the facility while Veolia will operate the plant, which is projected to recycle about 2.1 million gallons of water per day, reducing operational costs and protecting local water supply. The plant is expected to become operational in late 2026.

Catalytic Technology Removes Toxic Chemicals from Microchip Manufacturing Wastewater

Researchers at the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia have developed a new catalytic technology that breaks down key contaminants, hydrogen peroxide and triazole, in water used for semiconductor manufacturing. Professor Long Nghiem and Associate Professor Cuong Ton-That, in partnership with Infinite Water International Australia, pioneered the research to streamline water recycling at manufacturers, helping to treat recycled water to the rigorous standards required to wash delicate components. The method is tailored to be implemented in existing wastewater infrastructure, and uses an oxidation agent to target contaminants, making the water safe for further use or for disposal.

Welcome New WateReuse Member!

The WateReuse Association welcomes Aquapolo Ambiental. Founded in 2009, Aquapolo is the largest water recycling plant in Latin America, and the fifth largest in the world, with a treatment capacity of over 260 gallons per second. Located in São Paulo, Brazil, Aquapolo services industrial facilities in the ABC Paulista region and currently serves nine clients and 14 industrial plants. Aquapolo was founded in response to regulations restricting industrial use of potable water in the region. With sustainability at the forefront of its mission, the operation saves one liter of drinking water for every liter provided to its industrial clients.

CO: Annual WateReuse Colorado Conference Addresses Reuse Planning and Implementation

Last week, WateReuse Colorado held its annual conference at the Colorado State University Spur campus in Denver, drawing nearly 120 water sector professionals across Colorado, Arizona, Florida, and California to discuss barriers, opportunities, and challenges for implementation of water reuse in the West. Key discussions centered on Colorado reuse case studies, implementing reuse in small communities, contaminants of concern, and operations. The conference featured introductory remarks from WateReuse Colorado President Erik Jorgensen, WateReuse Interim Executive Director Brian Biesemeyer, and Professor Sybil Sharvelle from Colorado State University.

CA: Recycled Salinas Valley Water to be Used by Monterey under New Agreement

Beginning this month, Monterey One Water is recycling water from food processors in Salinas, rather than the water being treated for disposal. The agreement between Pure Water Monterey, City of Salinas, and Monterey One Water allows the water to be treated for recycling and stored in the Seaside groundwater basin for future use on the Monterey Peninsula without detracting from Salinas Valley's groundwater supply. The agreement will continue through October 2025 with the option for two six-month renewals. Salinas is enhancing its water treatment facility in response to industry growth and continues to collaborate with Monterey One Water to create alternative conveyance systems for treatment or recycling.

California Profile in Reuse

In 1918, the state of California developed the first water reuse regulations in the United States to help irrigate its booming agricultural sector. Since then, California has remained a global leader in water reuse. Today, California recycles over one million acre-feet of water each year to benefit people and the environment. That’s enough water savings to meet the indoor and outdoor needs of at least two million households! California communities are securing their water future by producing highly purified recycled water for drinking and recharging aquifers, as well as by expanding non-drinking water reuse for agriculture and irrigation and recycling more water within buildings. Check out the WateReuse California Profile in Reuse with simple facts, figures, and case studies – and share it with everyone from policymakers to students.

Arizona Webcast: Corrosion Control Guidance for Arizona's AWP Program

May 22, 2025
1:30 pm ET | 10:30 am PT
Free to WateReuse Members

When Arizona adopted its Advanced Water Purification rules in March 2025, it opened the floodgates for a new generation of direct potable reuse projects. But the new rules also created a need for updated guidance on corrosion control. Simon Horsley, an expert with 20 years of corrosion control expertise, will explain how new processes can affect water chemistry and distribution systems. RO and non-RO treatment processes raise important considerations for product water corrosivity, influenced by the extent of RO treatment and post-conditioning processes. Horsley will review corrosion control requirements and guide water system owners in developing a corrosion control study (CCS) for systems supplied by Advanced Water Purification Facilities. Key topics include system characterization, DPR-specific corrosion risks, desktop evaluations of water quality shifts, demonstration testing approaches, and strategies for implementation and monitoring.
