Final Push: Engage Your Congressional Delegation to Fund Water Reuse Priorities

December 20 deadline

This summer, the House and Senate Appropriations Committees began passing their respective FY 2025 funding bills for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Bureau of Reclamation. Congress must finalize FY 2025 funding levels by December 20.  Though a Continuing Resolution through sometime next year is possible, the House and Senate are currently debating whether and to what extent to fund key programs like the Title XVI Water Reuse Grants Program and the Pilot Program for Alternative Water Source Grants in a final FY25 Appropriations package.

WateReuse Members in Northeast Combat Unexpected Drought

An Associated Press article last week highlighted the severe winter drought that many states in the northeastern U.S. are currently experiencing. The article discusses water reuse and managed aquifer recharge as important tools for drought resiliency, referencing WateReuse members Hampton Roads Sanitation District (VA) and Anne Arundel County (MD) as regional leaders. Zach Gallagher, CEO of WateReuse member Natural Systems Utilities is quoted as well, discussing the important role of onsite water reuse in the Northeast and the case study of New York City’s Domino Sugar Refinery development.

Singapore Brings NEWBrew to COP29

At this year's U.N. climate talks held in Baku, Azerbaijan, Singapore’s water agency PUB made headlines by serving its famous purified water NEWBrew pilsner. The beer was brewed to increase awareness of Singapore’s NEWater program. "It's part of the acceptance of the use of recycled water, which is, in general, a difficult topic," says Ong Tze-Ch'in, chief executive of Singapore's Public Utilities Board (PUB). The agency partnered with local brewery Brewerkz to develop and distribute NEWBrew.

2024 WateReuse Florida Annual Meeting
