Among WateReuse Florida’s vision and goals is engaging and supporting young professionals and students to enhance their potential and achievement. In doing so, WateReuse Florida has been providing annual $1,000 scholarships for over a decade at three Florida universities (Florida, Central Florida, and South Florida) to support junior and senior year students that have expressed interest in pursuing a career in water resources, water reuse, water supply, treatment or desalination and who have a research project or topic that is germane to the issues facing water reuse or desalination. Our stage of growth as a section now allows us to increase our support in perpetuity with our first named scholarship. On June 29, the WateReuse Florida board approved a motion to establish a named endowment with the University of South Florida. Generated income from the endowment will now be disbursed annually as a scholarship of $1,000 to a deserving student. Going forward, our plan is to continue to work toward a similar outcome with the University of Florida and the University of Central Florida while we continue to provide a $1,000 annual scholarship as before. Many thanks go to Mark Elsner, a charter member and current adviser to our board, who guided us through this stage of the process. WateReuse Florida is also planning to host a webinar entitled “Navigating the PFAS Waters from a Water Reuse Perspective” to take place Sept. 13. We all have received proposed regulatory limits for drinking water for the pervasive “forever chemicals” known collectively as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). As the PFAS regulatory framework is finalized, a webinar that incorporates the unique perspective of water reuse is needed and will cover the current thinking of how best to monitor and manage PFAS with a look toward the future. This brief 90-minute webinar will cover the PFAS challenges from regulatory, agriculture, and utility perspectives in Florida. Be on the lookout for additional details on the webinar and we hope you plan to attend. Michael Sweeney, Ph.D. WateReuse Florida President
