WateReuse Florida Update

Year in Review Message from WateReuse Florida President Kerry Kates

As we wrap up 2025, I’m incredibly proud of what WateReuse Florida was able to accomplish this year.

We met our long-term goal of getting the Florida potable reuse rules adopted, our chapter shined during the WateReuse Symposium in Tampa, we held two stellar in-person events in Jupiter and Orlando, and we increased our membership with five new members.

Looking ahead to 2026, we’re excited to hold our Water Reuse Week Summit at JEA’s H2.O Purification Center and I hope you’ll make plans to be there.

Finally, I want to thank each of our members and our generous sponsors for your commitment and contributions to the success of our Florida chapter. I wish you all Happy Holidays and a wonderful New Year!

WateReuse Florida Annual Meeting Recap

The WateReuse Florida annual meeting convened in Orlando to coordinate legislative and policy strategy and share association updates among water reuse professionals.

Executive director Bruno Pigott led a panel covering EPA policy changes, funding, and legislative endeavors.

The technical segment featured David Adams of Pinellas County Utilities, who detailed the use of excess Lake Tarpon surface water to augment the county's purple pipe irrigation system for its Aquifer Storage and Recovery - Managed Aquifer Recharge project.

Florida Representative Bill Conerly provided his insights on accelerating water reuse legislative efforts in Tallahassee. He leveraged his engineering expertise in meetings with utilities, consultants, and agencies to discuss policy challenges and solutions.

The event closed with WateReuse leadership presenting an update on recent association growth, activities and awards. Congratulations to the following WateReuse Florida members who were recognized for their outstanding commitment, service and contribution to the water reuse industry:

Sarasota County Expands Water Reclamation Facility

Civil Engineering Source recently highlighted Sarasota County’s expansion of its Bee Ridge Water Reclamation Facility, which will increase the facility’s capacity from 12 to 18 million gallons per day and upgrade it to meet Advanced Water Treatment standards. The project was driven by the need to mitigate harmful algal blooms, improve water quality, and conserve potable water supplies. The upgrade includes the installation of new biological nutrient removal basins and what is expected to be Florida’s largest membrane bioreactor. The project’s final phase will ensure that 100% of the treated effluent is reused for either irrigation or injection into salinity barrier wells. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
