The Hyperion Advanced Water Purification Facility is a proof-of-concept treatment process that will provide highly treated water for multiple non-potable uses at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant. These uses may include make-up water for cooling towers, toilet flushing, boiler feed makeup and landscape irrigation. The process will also provide an opportunity for the staff at Los Angeles Environment and Sanitation (LASAN) to gain hands-on experience with advanced water purification technologies, including membrane bioreactors, reverse osmosis, UV advanced oxidation and calcite contactors for product water stabilization to prepare operators for future, large scale advanced treatment system operation. The project is being delivered on an aggressive schedule as design-build with Walsh Constructors. The demonstration facility is being constructed on the existing plant site with significant footprint constraints, challenging soil conditions, and existing facilities that must remain in service through construction. A highly variable influent quality and a need for a pure, non-corrosive product water presented some unique challenges for the process design team. This presentation will cover the major challenges, creative solutions and lessons learned from this unique project.
