In a Senate Environment and Public Works Committee hearing last week, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA)’s Administrator Michael Regan testified to the importance of the President’s fiscal year 2023 budget noting that investing in the USEPA is an investment in the health and wellness of the nation. In response to a question by Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Regan made a call for more water reuse and efficiency to improve the quality of water. The WateReuse Association was instrumental in ensuring that water reuse priorities were represented in the budget. Read more.

This March, action leaders working on the WRAP highlighted progress on ten different actions at the Annual WateReuse Symposium and finalized three new action outputs. The three WRAP-related reports released in the past month reflect the efforts and partnerships made possible through the WRAP over the last few years:

• Navigating the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System NPDES Permitting Process for Water Reuse Projects (Action 2.6).
• Multi-Agency Water Reuse Programs: Lessons for Successful Collaboration (Action 2.16).
• Pure Potential: The Case for Stormwater Capture and Use (Action 3.3).

H2O Innovation joins the WateReuse Association as a complete water solutions company. In addition to their work providing membrane technologies and engineering expertise to support municipal and industrial water, wastewater, and water reuse customers, H2O Innovation provides both contract operations and specialty chemicals, consumables, and engineered products.

Global Water Resources has received a permit from the Arizona Department of Water to recharge an aquifer with recycled water for beneficial reuse by the City of Maricopa. The process, which will take two to three years to get underway, will use the Groves Recyclable Water Management Facility to help recharge the Maricopa-Stanfield Subbasin. Read more.

JEA broke ground Thursday on a new Greenland Water Reclamation Facility to treat wastewater for reuse in irrigation. Raynetta Marshall, Chief Operating Officer at JEA noted that water reclamation is about sustainability, allowing wastewater to be treated and reclaimed for irrigation and other uses, like at power plants, rather than discharged into the St. Johns River. The National Science Foundation (NSF) recently awarded the University of Nevada, Reno with a $149,923 planning grant for a “Nevada Water” partnership to develop solutions to state water needs. The partnership will include public, private, tribal, nonprofit, and other groups working together on sustainable projects like water recycling. Read more.

Singapore’s national water agency – the Public Utilities Board (PUB) – and local craft brewery Brewerkz partnered to launch Newbrew. The beer is made with Singapore's Newater brand of clean, high-quality recycled water. Back by popular demand, Newbrew made its debut in 2018 and will now be commercially available into the summer at supermarket chains and online platforms. The beverage highlights not only that recycled water can exceed international standards of safe drinking water, but that it can also be clean enough to be used in beer brewing. Read more.

Last Wednesday, Dr. Sunil Sinha of Virginia Tech and Chris Angell of Xylem presented a webcast on "Enabling Resilient Communities through a National Smart One Water Strategy." 

They outlined a research plan exploring how people interact with smart water services, as well as advancing national-scale cyberinfrastructure for adaptive management of water systems, driven by societal needs for resilience, sustainability, and social justice.

The Four Corners region includes the arid western states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. These four states have several common challenges to providing reliable water supplies: rapid population growth, severe long term drought conditions, and dwindling or overallocated natural water sources. Indirect potable reuse is currently being practiced in these states, often through managed groundwater replenishment or incidental means. Is engineered potable reuse the next step to building safe, reliable, and resilient water resource portfolios?

While water utilities in the Four Corners states are taking steps toward direct potable reuse (DPR), each of these states face different implementation challenges. This panel discussion delves into the progress and issues regarding DPR in the region.
