The National Water Week Policy Fly In is co-hosted by the WateReuse Association, Water Environment Federation, National Association of Clean Water Agencies, and Water Research Foundation.

President Biden signed a $1.5 trillion omnibus appropriations bill funding the federal government through the rest of fiscal year 2022. This money comes in addition to the funding provided in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 (IIJA). The appropriations package includes a variety of relatively small increases and decreases for water programs across the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Bureau of Reclamation.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its Implementation Guidance Memo for the Clean Water and Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (SRF) Programs. Administration priorities include encouraging flexibility in the programs, better supporting disadvantaged communities, and supporting resilience and one water innovation. Visit EPA’s dashboard.

As the National Water Reuse Action Plan (WRAP) celebrated its second anniversary, action leaders shared progress and new resources at the 37th Annual WateReuse Symposium. Four WRAP actions released new resources, expanding the information available on state regulations, stormwater capture and use, NPDES permitting, and lessons in successful collaboration for multi-agency water reuse programs. WateReuse thanks our members’ dedication and expertise shared in the development of Action 3.3, Action 2.6, and Action 2.16.

Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center (MASSTC) joins as the nation’s premier third-party testing and research facility for innovative and alternative onsite septic treatment technologies. MASSTC is a Division of Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment and has tested dozens of technologies while providing space to technology vendors for research and development.

Professor Yang Deng of Montclair State University has been awarded a four-year grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to study innovative water reuse technologies for irrigation. Dr. Deng plans to develop design principles for a novel iron-based water reuse process to transform municipal wastewater into high-quality irrigation water. “The technology will enable local water recycling in a more cost and energy efficient manner and thus reduce the reliance on long-distance water and wastewater transport,” he says. The Four Corners region includes the arid western states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. These four states have several common challenges to providing reliable water supplies: rapid population growth, severe long term drought conditions, and dwindling or overallocated natural water sources. Indirect potable reuse is currently being practiced in these states, often through managed groundwater replenishment or incidental means. Is engineered potable reuse the next step to building safe, reliable, and resilient water resource portfolios?

While water utilities in the Four Corners states are taking steps toward direct potable reuse (DPR), each of these states face different implementation challenges. This panel discussion delves into the progress and issues regarding DPR in the region.
