Is Your Water Reuse Project Ready for Federal Funding? 

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will send billions of dollars to your communities for investments in water recycling projects. Please take this brief five-question survey to help WateReuse Association understand if your agency plans to apply for federal funding or financing for a water reuse project in the upcoming two years. Your feedback will help us ensure that every possible dollar of federal funding for water reuse is put to good use.

Village of Cloudcroft, New Mexico is a new member of the WateReuse Association! Their Potable Use of Reclaimed Water (PURe Water) Project looks to expand their water supply through the use of advanced treated wastewater.

The South Tahoe Public Utility District is developing a Recycled Water Strategic Plan. The district recently held a virtual public meeting to evaluate current water reuse operations and practices and explore the best path forward. Currently, the district collects, treats, and recycles wastewater from the South Lake Tahoe region with an average of 3.9 million gallons per day of recycled water being pumped to Alpine County. The Broward water reuse pipeline expansion project had a ribbon cutting ceremony with Mayor Michael Udine on Friday. The pipeline will enable 60 percent of the wastewater currently being discharged into the ocean to be beneficially reused for irrigation, decreasing the demand on traditional water supplies.

WateReuse member Plummer, a water engineering firm headquartered in Texas, announced its continued growth into Florida through the acquisition of WATERMARK Engineering Group, a Tampa-based integrated water resource engineering firm. “We are excited to combine the engineering capabilities, superior technical expertise and established experience of these two successful firms to serve the Florida water resources market,” said Plummer's CEO Chris Young, PE. Read more.

The Water Research Foundation is now accepting pre-proposals for the 2022 Unsolicited Research Program and Tailored Collaboration (TC) Program. Unsolicited Research Program proposals may address research on recycled water and involve the piloting of novel technologies. Hear experts in California discuss two alternative approaches that have great potential to replace ozone-BAC in some Direct Potable Reuse (DPR) projects without any substantial impacts on project cost, footprint, or operational complexity.

Draft California DPR regulations require a high degree of protection for unknown chemicals, chemical peaks, and pathogenic organisms where at least four separate treatment processes and three diverse treatment mechanisms are needed. These include ozone and biologically activated carbon (BAC) prior to full advanced treatment for chemical control. While efficacy of ozone-BAC has been well proven, it can also increase operational complexity, footprint, and project costs. The draft regulations allow for alternatives if an agency demonstrates that the proposed train removes contaminants of concern to an equivalent or better level.

For the past three years, Virginia Tech has led a collaborative academic research planning effort exploring the concept of Smart One Water Management. Join this webcast to learn how research can improve the reliability of our water resources and advance the implementation of water reuse. The research plan covers governance and implementation, innovation ecosystems, workforce development, diversity and stakeholders, and water reuse.

Smart One Water requires understanding how people interact with smart water services, as well as advancing national-scale cyberinfrastructure for adaptive management of water systems, driven by societal needs for resilience, sustainability, and social justice. Despite an increased urgency to modernize and integrate water system management practices, for most communities, management remains ad hoc and siloed with only incremental and reactive changes over the last few decades. Join us to learn about a major national initiative to converge disciplines around the most pressing challenges in our water systems.
