Home\Multipurpose Water Reuse in the Power Sector: An Investigation at an Electric Utility and Wetland in Florida

Registration is closed for this event
The Water Environment & Reuse Foundation (WE&RF) in collaboration with the Florida Power and Light funded this project to investigate the application of treated municipal wastewater for reuse applications in the power sector.

Thermoelectric power production facilities require a significant volume of water for cooling and boiler systems. In order to minimize their dependence on freshwater sources, the opportunities with the use of municipal reclaimed water are increasingly being assessed. Particularly in the US, there is an enormous opportunity for both municipal wastewater and power utilities to collaborate for the mutually beneficial use of reclaimed water. For instance, about 75 to 80% of all existing and proposed power plants are within ten miles of a municipal wastewater treatment facility. Despite close proximity to the wastewater facilities, only sixty of five thousand power plants are currently using municipal reclaimed water for cooling tower and boiler applications. Thus, the Water Environment & Reuse Foundation (WE&RF) in collaboration with the Florida Power and Light funded this project to investigate the application of treated municipal wastewater for reuse applications in the power sector, specifically for cooling water, boiler make-up, and for wetland rehydration purposes in Florida. This webcast will present: (i) opportunities, challenges, and case studies on the application of municipal reclaimed water at electric utilities; (ii) effectiveness of innovative and traditional treatment technologies for the removal of targeted contaminants; and (iii) cost-comparison of selected treatment trains considered in this study for reclaimed water treatment.
