California Section Conference to be Held March 4-6 in Palm Springs
ALEXANDRIA, VA – The California Section of the WateReuse Association will hold its 2007 Annual Conference March 4-6 at the Wyndham Palm Springs Hotel in Palm Springs, CA. The program will include more than 45 technical papers, panel discussions, and a workshop. The theme of the conference is “Drought Proofing the Golden State—Sustainability in the Era of Climate Change.”
The conference is designed for individuals, organizations, and agencies that are associated with or interested in the design, management, operation, and use of water recycling facilities and projects. The topics covered will include recycled water planning, operational issues, regulatory issues, financial considerations, and environmental benefits.
The event will begin with an insightful and thought-provoking workshop on Water Quality, Contaminants of Emerging Concern, and Health Issues. The workshop, which will be moderated by George Tchobanoglous of the University of California–Davis, will feature four presentations followed by a panel discussion. The panel will include Bob Hultquist, California Department of Health Services; Robert Cheng, Long Beach Water Department; and Jean Debroux, Kennedy/Jenks Consultants.
The opening session will feature a presentation by Rich Atwater of the Inland Empire Utilities Agency entitled “Activities of the Southern California Salinity Coalition Addressing the Most Under-Recognized Water Quality Issue in the Southwest.” Palm Springs Mayor Ronald Oden has been invited to welcome conference attendees.
The conference will include an awards luncheon on Monday, March 5 where excellence in the California water recycling community will be recognized. The Gordon Cologne Breakfast and Award Ceremony on Tuesday, March 6 will feature a legislative update and recognize individuals who have made an outstanding contribution in promoting water recycling in California. Gordon Cologne, a retired state legislator who served as the Association’s first lobbyist, has been invited to attend.
Another highlight of the conference is a golf tournament on Sunday, March 4 at the Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert, CA. Desert Willow is irrigated with recycled water and has emerged as a favorite destination for golf enthusiasts. The conference will end with a tour that will include stops at the Coachella Valley Water District’s largest water recycling plant and 19 recharge ponds along the upper Whitewater River subbasin.
